African Swine Fever Extends to Greece

02/10/2020

A case of African swine fever was diagnosed in Greece in the region of Serres, close to the border with Bulgaria. The inexorable spread of African swine fever is fueled by both illegal and uncontrolled commercial trade in pork and swine products . In many cases feral hogs shedding virus serve to transmit infection since they do not recognize national boundries

Serbia has apparently acquired African swine fever from Bulgaria and Romania due to movement of wild boars accros unfenced borders.

Greece has quarantined the affected area surrounding the index farm and will follow the directives of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
