Mexico to Decide on Tariff-Rate Quota for Broiler Imports

The incoming Administration of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will have to decide on the size of the tariff-rate quota, currently 300,000 metric tons as approved by the Department of Economia in 2013. At this time, it was considered expedient to allow tariff-free imports based on the disparity between the supply, limited by avian influenza and domestic demand.

Brazil is the leading beneficiary of the tariff-rate quota and combined with other suppliers accounted for approximately 240,000 metric tons by late September.

Predictably retention of the tariff-rate quota is opposed by domestic producers represented by the Mexican Association of Poultry Processors (UNAM).
