Domestic Producers in the Philippines Opposing Imports

06/22/2020

According to USAPEEC MondayLine of June 19th Associations representing domestic broiler integrators and processors and feed millers are lobbying the Government of the Philippines to restrict imports of broiler meat.  As in many nations, demand for chicken has declined due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Philippines ranked 12th among importers of chicken parts from the U.S. for the period January through April with 2.4 percent of volume (29,037 metric tons) and 2.13 percent of value ($27.6 million).  Demand for chicken during the first two months of 2020 was driven in part by a shortage of pork due to the growing incidence of African swine fever.

Total imports into the Philippines over the first five months of 2020 amounted to 178,000 metric tons up from 118,000 metric tons during the corresponding period in 2019. Mechanically deboned chicken represented 60 percent of 2020 imports.
