Walmart Experimenting with New Sam’s Club Format

Sam’s Club is opening an experimental location in Dallas incorporating “Scan & Pay” technology.  The store will use the Sam’s Club Now system for a seamless shopping experience.  The store will be 32,000 square feet in extent, approximately one-quarter the size of traditional big-box Sam’s Club stores.

Walmart intends to evaluate a wide range of technologies including computer vision, machine learning, and robotics.  The Sam’s Club Now app. will assist customers to locate items and will make suggestions based on past purchasing patterns.  It will be possible to place orders remotely for pickup within an hour.

The Walmart initiative follows the Amazon intention to open 3,000 stores without cashiers by 2021 and the concurrent deployment of Kroger’s “Scan, Bag, Go” model.
