South African Consumers Demanding VAT-Free Chicken

South African consumers, especially among the lower income demographic are demanding a rescission of value added tax from a number of items including chicken.

The National government has empaneled experts to lower the tax burden on consumers by zero- rating bread, flour, and chicken as food staples in addition to school uniforms and personal hygiene products. Zero-rating chicken would represent a benefit to consumers to the value of $0.5 million annually.  It is estimated by the SA Poultry Association that this would increase consumption by 80 percent and create 10,000 additional jobs. These appear to be speculative projections.

Fair Play, a trade-union affiliated organization is spearheading the movement to remove VAT on foods and is lobbying Parliament to relieve the burden of this cost on low-income consumers.
