Monthly Turkey Production and Prices, June 2022

Poult Production and Placement:

 

The June 15th 2022 edition of the USDA Turkey Hatchery Report, issued monthly, documented 26.07 million eggs in incubators on June 1st 2022 compared to 25.96 million eggs on June 1st 2021* The June set was up 0.4 percent (0.11 million eggs) from June 2021 and 2.0 percent down from the previous month of May 2022.

 

A total of 22.60 million poults were hatched during May 2022 compared to 20.91 million in May 2021*. The May 2022 hatch was up 8.1 percent (1.1 million poults) from the previous month of April 2022.

A total of 21.49 million poults were placed on farms in the U.S. in May 2022, compared to 19.71 million in May 2021*. The May placement was 9.1 percent, (1.8 million poults) more than the month of May 2021. This data suggests disposal of 1.11 million poults during the month, therefore approximately 4.9 percent of the May 2022 hatch was not placed.

 

For the twelve-month period January 2021 through May 2022 inclusive, 269.36 million poults were hatched and 250.29 million were placed. This suggests disposal of 18.97 million poults over the 12-month period, corresponding to 7.0 percent of all poults hatched.

The June 24th edition of the USDA Turkey Market News Report confirmed the following provisional data for turkeys slaughtered under Federal inspection:-

  • For the processing week ending June 18th 2022, 1.587 million hens were processed at 15.6 lbs. live. This was 9.9 percent less than the 1.761 hens processed during the corresponding week in May 2022 and 13.3 percent less than the 1.832 million processed during the corresponding week in June 2021. Ready to cook (RTC) weight for the most recent week was 19.942 million lbs. (9,065 metric tons). This quantity was 18.3 percent less than the corresponding week in May 2022 and 21.5 percent less than the 25.410 million lbs. during the corresponding week in June 2021. Dressing percentage was a nominal 80.5 percent. For 2022 to date hen production attained 536.76 million lbs. (243,981 metric tons). This quantity is 2.7 percent less than for the corresponding period in 2021.
  • For the processing week ending June 18th 2022, 2.047 million toms were processed at 42.1 lbs. live. This was 7.5 percent more than the 1.905 toms processed during the corresponding week in May 2022 and 6.4 percent more than the 2.186 million during the corresponding week in June 2021. Ready to cook (RTC) weight for the most recent week was 69.308 million lbs. (31,504 metric tons). This quantity was 4.9 percent more than the corresponding week in May 2022 and 8.0 percent less than the 75.369 million lbs. during the corresponding week in June 2021. Dressing percentage was a nominal 80.5 percent. For 2022 to date tom production attained 1,785 million lbs. (811,583 metric tons). This quantity is 3.5 percent less than the corresponding period in 2021.

The National average frozen hen price during the week of June 18th was 157 cents per lb., up 12 cents per lb. from the corresponding week in May 2022 and up approximately 54 cents per lb. from the three-year average of 103 cents per lb.. Inventories:

On June 20th 2022 cold storage holdings at selected centers amounted to 73,243 lbs., 0.2 percent less than the inventory of 73,384 lbs. on June 1st 2022.

The June 24th 2022 edition of the USDA Cold Storage Report issued monthly, documented a total turkey stock of 376.1 million lbs. (170,945 metric tons) on May 31st 2022, equivalent to 3.8 weeks of normal seasonal production and down 3.7 percent compared to the inventory on May 31st 2021. The May 31st 2022 value was 13.1 percent above the April 30th 2022 level. This change is consistent with season and denotes deterioration in the balance between supply and the combination of May 2022 domestic demand and lower exports.

 

  • The Whole Turkey category of 221.7 million lbs. representing 58.8 percent of total storage of 376.1 million lbs. on May 31st 2022 was 22.3 percent higher than the adjusted inventory for the previous month and 6.9 percent higher than on May 31st
  • Tom carcasses in storage on May 31st 2022 increased by 3.0 percent from May 31st 2021 to 134.5 million lbs. on May 31st Tom carcasses increased 27.2 percent during May 2022 compared to the previous month.
  • Hen carcasses in storage increased by 13.6 percent from May 31st 2021 to 86.8 million lbs. on May 31st Hen carcasses increased 27.2 percent during May 2022 compared to the previous month.
  • Breasts in storage declined by 27.8 percent from May 31st 2021 to 47.2 million lbs. on May 31st 2022 but up by 9.1 percent from April 30th
  • The “Other” and “Unclassified” categories collectively amounted to 101.5 million lbs. or 26.9 percent of inventory on May 31st The magnitude of these two non-specified categories suggests that the USDA should attempt to classify product more accurately as to specific product.

May 2022 Production

According to the USDA Poultry Slaughter Report released on June 24th 2022 covering, May 2022, comprising 22 working days:-

  • During May 2022, 16.47 million young turkeys were processed. (4.0 percent less than in May 2021);
  • Total live weight attained 512.3 million lbs. (8.8 percent less than in May 2021);
  • Average live weight was 31.1 lbs. (4.9 percent less than May 2021);
  • RTC attained 410.2 million lbs. (down 8.5 percent from May 2021) with a yield of 80.5 percent.
  • The proportion of frozen product in May 2022 attained 40.3 percent of total RTC produced.
  • During May 2022 ante-mortem condemnation attained 0.30 percent of live weight, (0.28 in May 2021).
  • During April 2022, 1.17 percent of RTC weight was condemned (1.26 percent in May 2021)

U.S. exports of turkey products in 2021 attained 249,045 metric tons, down 3.9 percent from 2020 (259,127 metric tons in 2020). Value increased 14.0 percent to $666 million ($584 million in 2020). Unit price increased 18.6 percent from 2020 to $2,674 per ton.

 

For the 1st four months of 2022 turkey exports fell 21.2 percent to 62,279 metric tons compared to the corresponding period in 2021. Value increased 16.2 percent to $208 million with a 50.1 percent increase in unit value to $3,313 per ton.

 

The U.S. turkey industry shipped 169,6736 metric tons to Mexico or 68.2 percent of all turkey exports, valued at $450 million during 2021. During 2021 China imported 5,580 metric tons of turkey products with a value of $9.8 million representing a unit value of $1,756 per metric ton.

 

As at May 25th, losses of turkeys depleted as a result of HPAI attained 5.5 million birds on 131 farms with a sharp decline in incidence rate in late May.
